My Substack is ONE YEAR OLD!! Thank you to all my supporters and subscribers!! I know it has been a while since my last post and I do have some personal writings baking in the oven. I hope to get them out soon. Thanks for sticking with me.
I have been writing, it is just that I have stepped away for a moment from personal stuff and have been working as an independent contractor for my friend who runs a Non-Profit Community Media Center called The Local Seen in Plymouth, Massachusetts. I am a Research & Marketing Assistant, so write marketing copy and manage the Local Seen Instagram account. Yes I did link that there. I am a marketer now. Likeandfollowlikeandfollowlikeandfollow
I am also writing my first script for Tik Tok, which is fun. But my fave thing to do so far is a series called What’s The Story? Basically, they are interest pieces delving deeper into a variety of subjects. Most of them have one foot in the present and one in the past. Currently I am writing about the history of bananas, a history of course that speaks directly to current ecological and ethical issues rampant in the food industry. I love the experience of looking at topics that are of relevance to us now through a historical lens. Unpacking the layers and addressing the connections between contemporary and historical happenings.
It also a thrill to see something I wrote produced. Writers work on the flat page most of the time, so to see it given a body—turned into something with literal breath, with sound and visuals!!! So much fun. I am going to link a few of my favorites here, but you can find all the finished projects in a playlist on the Local Seen's Youtube channel. Which you can also follow if you want. WHAT? Sorry, it’s my job!!!!
Jen’s What’s The Story Favorites:
Honest Dick (I am venturing a guess that this one gets a lot of views from folks who are NOT looking for a folksy interest piece about a monument to a horse.)
Camp Twin Oaks - turn of the century camp and then resort along the South Shore of Boston catering to the Black community.
Valentines Day! - the first one of these that I have done to start with a skit featuring Local Seen folks. That is Tiff and Ben!! Exploring some of the myths we have been told about Valentine’s Day was enlightening, and as Gen Z says, “I’m not gonna lie if I’m being honest” it was satisfying and fun.
Alright folks!! Thank you again for your continued support and eyes on my words. Heading into summer… I will do my best to get back to posting at least two Substacks a month. For now, enjoy some Honest Dick! (Linked above) marketingmarketingmarketing
